Ben is taking martial arts training in a local school. I like the
program for the most part, but there are a few things that concern me.

For one, the main instructor talks up a good game of “respect” but does
little to display it towards the kids or other teachers.

Ben sort of looks up to this (19 year old) man…and I want him to
continue with the course…but this kid is starting to get on my
nerves.

Damn it…respect has to be *earned*.

  1. I think that Ben looks up to you a lot more than he does his instructor. If you teach him your values of respect, then that’s what he’ll default to despite this new influence. At least until he turns 13.

  2. Don’t be afraid to talk about this with the teacher. Perhaps he is unaware how he is coming across to you, and a gentle discussion may help a bit.

Then again, he could simply be an ass. We’ve had our share of those.

If the teacher is not the owner a discussion with the owner may be smart as well. Tell the owner your concerns and think about another dojo if you must. There must be plenty of places in town.
