While I don’t think I was being hard on the guy yesterday, I do think he gave me a fair glimpse of what I can expect from him in the future. Thankfully, the owner is setting more realistic goals than I am at this phase. I was a bit concerned all told.

No, I don’t think the previous woman doing the gig was all that amazing. She had speed and a good degree of accuracy, but there were a host of other issues that made her less than desirable to maintain a long term work relationship with.

And yes, there seems to be a “lighter” attitude in the shop since she’s left.

So I’m back to the warehouse today. Hopefully I can get a lot of stuff cleaned up and caught up by this afternoon.

…but man is this new guy slow.

A nice guy. Very detail oriented and attentive, but…so…bloody…slow.

It didn’t help that the shop was backlogged from last week, or that the site went down on Saturday for the second time in a week…or that the previous gal in the job pretty much just said, “Fuck you, I’m outta here”…

Anyway.

So it turned out that the HD was bad. Probably a factory defect. I feel a little better knowing that I didn’t do something to kill it, but there was well over a month of work on it that’s now gone.

On the bright side, Apple was good enough to give me a new PowerBook to go home with. They agreed that a HD problem like that less than a month after I got the thing was probably a defective unit and not something more sinistar.

So, now I’m at home with the replacement 12″ PB. Gonna be a “fun” evening of reloading a bunch of software and tweaking stuff out…again.

Fun…

Fun…

Fun…

Why do I have the feeling deep down in my bones that this will not go well?

I know I must have done something to it, but when a Mac looses it’s boot volume, it’s not a pretty thing.

I know I’m probably going to have to go through this a few more times during the life of this project, but it still sucks.

Is negative blogging a victimless crime?

I tried it for a bit, kept my early morning 5am drafts for about a week to see if anything worthwhile came of it.

Um…no. I think I’m better off sticking to when I’m actually awake.

Got them changed out this afternoon. Slimmer, but still plastic. They are an odd two-toned style, with the inner side of them being a “dark honey” color. “You’re blond, so it works”, is what I was told.

They don’t bother me, and that’s really all that matters.

It’s been just a few weeks now and there are already a lot of things I like about OS X. They small annoyances have mostly passed (I still want a two-button mouse) but for the most part I am pretty happy with this thing.

Still, I really would not have gone this route had it not been work-provided.

…and I already don’t like them.

I really dislike the process of looking for new frames. Most of anything I get ends up hurting after awhile anyway, so I just tend to get whatever the most comfortable thing is.

This pair is a set of “Clark Kents”. Big, black frames with a really square look. I sort of like the looks of them (at least more than the others I was looking at) but I end up looking like Cory Doctorow with a beard. There were a couple of other pairs they had that I may take a look at this weekend. Gotta love that 30-day guarantee.

Used to be I’d get one of two styles. Either some black horn-rims or just Lennon specs. They don’t seem to make either anymore.
